BUSINESS SKILLS TIPS – 36 MENTORING FOR SUCCESS

I have been in business for over 35 years!  My own experience shows me that it is wise to have mentoring for success.  Let me explain how it worked for me:

I have combined many careers, starting as a property developer, turning a 6 bed lodging house into a 28 bedroom licensed London hotel, whilst bringing up my son and studying for my degree and then a masters degree in Psychology and Business Psychology.  My hotel success was due to support from information gathered via the Chamber of Commerce, but in its later stages, mostly from a Mentor / Consultant from the Small Firms Service in the UK from whom I received mentoring for success..

My 25 year sojourn in Brighton saw my property development boom.  I ran my own self improvementbusiness planning and business management workshops at my Brighton hotel and in London venues, I gained enormous press coverage after inviting journalists to participate in workshops alongside clients.  You can view some of these articles on my website’s Media page.

This business success was moulded by the last major world recession.  My Bank foreclosed on my business loan, they just called it in!  No hotel, no premises to operate from, so I changed direction and studied for a Cert.Ed teacher’s certificate and spent some years running my workshops at Universities and Colleges of Education.  One of my Cert.Ed tutors gave me some really good advice.  He mentored me about keeping up with technology as the field expanded.  He made me realise that I had valuable knowledge that would enable me to act as a Mentor to other people.  He viewed my course content and showed me how to use teaching techniques to enhance people’s learning ability, develop confidence and lead them to greater understanding and control over their lives as well as over the subject matter.  That way, a person can achieve personal success as well as business success.

After a break when I returned to London in order to care for my elderly parents, and then after their sad demise changed my focus, I embarked on another new direction by spending three years on an in-depth course (equivalent to yet another degree) bringing me right up to date with my online skills.  It was on this course I met my most recent Mentor, the amazing Steven Essa, who very patiently helped me to understand how to develop my training and workshop content into online webinars and webinar courses.  I mastered how to perform online interviews, how to put together testimonials, how to develop an online presence and how to help people to create website videos and use them for marketing purposes and for increasing sales, or even as a library of information, customer or client support or staff training.

In my latest short podcast I talk about the importance of having a Mentor for your personal success or business success.  I suggest ways that a person can find a mentor, i.e. through Business Clubs, via Chambers’ of Commerce, Men’s Clubs, Women’s Groups, Professional Associations and so on.
